Liverpool’s signing of Luis Diaz in the January transfer window was in line with the club’s overarching recruitment strategy, according to Jurgen Klopp.

Diaz joined Liverpool on a five-year deal worth £90,000 a week last week after agreeing to pay Porto £37.5m upfront and £12.5m in potential add-ons.

The 25-year-old winger could make his debut when Liverpool host Cardiff City in their FA Cup fourth round tie on Sunday afternoon.

His addition to the squad was opportunistic by Liverpool, who Tottenham and Barcelona amazed during negotiations.

Diaz has caught the eye with 16 goals and four assists in 26 appearances for Porto this season and will add depth to Liverpool’s attack midway through the season.

Liverpool had been monitoring Diaz’s development for some time and made their decision after learning that Tottenham had agreed a fee with Porto which was significantly below his £66.8m (80m) release clause. euros).

Klopp was delighted with the scouting department’s work to sign the Colombia international and believes the transfer is part of a larger pattern of business from Liverpool.

“I know this is a signing that has gotten our fans excited and it’s really cool,” he wrote in his post. program notes before the Cardiff game.

“It’s good to be excited and optimistic about something. I like the energy that comes with it.

“It’s a smart deal for the club, I have to say, and it’s been very well managed and secured by our football operations team, with the support of the property and Mike Gordon in particular.

“I don’t want to go into the chapter and verse about Luis’ qualities, because soon he will have the chance to show them himself.

“What he does will be far more important than anything I say. But in terms of helping the team, the team and the club, it’s fantastic that we’ve made this possible.

“I’m sure the fans are usually fed up with my answers to transfer questions at press conferences because we don’t give much.

“But what is clear is that he is a player who we believe has potential for the future, but the ability to help now as well.

“I’ve been very clear in the past: the only players you should be looking to sign in the January window are the players you would want in the summer. That’s definitely the case with Luis.

Liverpool’s successful efforts to sign Diaz have been directed by Julian Ward who will soon succeed Michael Edwards as the club’s sporting director.

The move means Liverpool have signed just one player in each of the last two transfer windows, following Ibrahima Konate’s move from RB Leipzig in the summer.
