Betty Disero seeks another term as Lord Mayor of Niagara-on-the-Lake

Betty Disero has submitted her candidacy, seeking re-election as Lord Mayor of Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Disero filed his paperwork just four days after the period opened, with more than 1,000 approving signatures.

“We didn’t want to wait,” she said. “If you want to do it, do it. Let’s put the appointment. I didn’t want to play any games and I wanted people to know where I was at.

Disero won his first term as Lord Mayor in the 2018 election. She said the past four years have been humbling and rewarding.

“I love Niagara-on-the-Lake. I love my connection with people in the audience,” she said. “There were challenges that we had to overcome, but it was totally humbling and rewarding.”

She hopes to be re-elected so she can see some of the projects she is currently working on through to completion.

“Like the planning work we’ve done, looking at infrastructure and how best to respond to these new realities, amenities for residents, but also a base for businesses in our area,” she said. . “Tourism strategy would be a piece of that infrastructure, but also playgrounds and recreation…and just to make sure that our work to make City Hall more accessible, easier to use and more modernized, is also something we started, and I want to stay until it’s finished.

Although Disero has said she does not plan to be Lord Mayor forever, she has said she would like the opportunity to have at least one more term.

“I gave a speech for the Chamber (of Commerce) and the bottom line for the state of the city is really hope and optimism,” she said. “I can see us recovering and improving further in the future.”

Potential candidates have until August 19 to apply. The 2022 municipal election will take place on Monday, October 24.
